Πλατεία Λιονταριών

  Lion Square

The Lion Square (or Elftheriou Venizelou Square) is the heart of the city of Iraklion and is very close to the port. At its centre there is a beautiful fountain with water running from four lions’ mouth, built from Francisco Morosini in the 17h century.

The Lion Square is an Iraklion hot spot and main meeting point, staying alive 24/7.  Visitors arriving at the port in the middle of the night always go to the square to taste the famous bougatsa or souvlaki. The central shopping road is also nearby, full of local products and touristic shops and traditional cafés. Right across the street from the fountain lies the Municipal Gallery where there is always an exhibition or an event.

The heart of Iraklion beats in the Lion Square, leaving every other corner of the city for the visitors to discover.
