Beaches in the district of Chania
We have chosen to mention some of the most beautiful beaches in the district of Chania, Crete, leaving many more for you to discover.
Elafonisi: On the southwest coast of the island there is one of its most beautiful, exotic beaches. Elafonisi is 80km away from the town of Chania and completely astonishes all tourists coming from all over the world. The white-pink sand, the blue-green, clean waters, offer a unique sense of pleasure and peace.
The waters are so shallow that the swimmer can walk across to other little rocks all over the bay. The beach is organized and you can get there by car or bus from the town of Chania. A few minutes away from Elafonisi on the west side you can also walk to the beach Kedrodasos. If you find yourself in Crete, do visit this unique landscape.
Balos (Gramvousa): On the northwest of Crete lies the bewitching beach of Balos. the beach is one of the most beautiful of the entire Mediterranean Sea. The sand is red and white, the waters are shallow and a blue-green lagoon is formed. You can get to Gramvousa and the beach of Balos taking one of the little boats from Kasteli, Kisamos. You can also go by car, but you will have to cross a dirt road and also walk down a hill.
Preveli: On the south of Rethymno district, at the green edge of the Kourtaliotiko canyon, lies the Preveli beach with beautiful waterfalls running across the beach and pouring into the sea. You can go walking from the Preveli Monastery. You can also rent a pedal boat in order to discover every hidden beauty of the area and also the lake between the palm trees.
Sougia: The long beach with the deep, crystal clear water is 70km off the town of Chania. The vegetation of the beach also offers perfect shaded spots for camping.
Plakias: At 40km southwest of Rethymnon lies Plakias, one of the longest beaches of Crete. Clear waters, sandy beach, large space and parking. In the area there are also rooms to let, hotels, taverns and shops.
Pachia Ammos, Chalikia: Those two beaches in the area of Paleochora, 74km off Chania, have been awarded with the EU’s blue flag. From Paleochora there are boats to Sougia, Aghia Roumeli, Loutro, Chora Sfakion, Elafonisi and Gavdos every day.
Grammenos: A long sandy beach with blue shallow waters, a little outside Paleochora, known for its sand dunes and cedars. There is also an organized camping spot on this beach which is considered one of the most beautiful on the island.
Falasarna: On the northwest of Crete, 17km from Kasteli, Kissamos, lies the breathtaking Falasarna beach. Thanks to its crystal clear water, it has been rewarded many times for being the best beach in Europe.
Georgioupoli: A very clean beach on the north coast of Crete, famous for the small white church built on a rock inside the sea. In the village of Georgioupoli, visitors can enjoy the touristic aspect of the island.
