Nerantzia Castle, Kos
The castle of Kos, also known as the Nerantzia Castle, is the most important part of the fortification built by the Ioannite Knights at the end of the 14th century. At the ends of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century, Kos was widely planted with lemon and bitter orange trees. “Nerantzia” means bitter-orange tree in Greek, and that’s what the castle is named after. This castle and the castle of Saint Peter on the coast of Ancient Halicarnassus used to control the passage way towards the Holy Places during the Crusades.
