Lion Gate of Mycenae

The Lion Gate of Mycenae can be considered as the first sample of monumental sculpture known in Europe. It is the main entrance of the Mycenaean citadel and was constructed around 1250 BC. It’s named after the famous lion relief on top of the gate. This perfectly symmetrical, naturalistic monument impresses the visitor and symbolizes the strength and prestige of this Mycenaean Palace.
