MesologiSights: Lagoon of Messolonghi

Lagoon of Messolonghi

The lagoon of Messolonghi is the largest lagoon in Greece. It’s a seaside lake with salt water. Its maximum length is about 27300 meters and maximum width 14800 meters. The lagoon’s deepest spot is 5-6m, but most of it is less than half a meter deep. Near the coasts, the lagoon is 0.1 meters deep, which makes it perfect for salt flats. It’s also famous for roe. The lagoon is protected by the RAMSAR treaty and is an environmental park and ecosystem. Near the lagoon of Messolonghi, the lagoon of Aitoliko is also located.
