Vathi
The first thing you see when arriving towards the port of Vathi in Ithaca is the small, green isle Lazareto in the middle of the bay and the village’s traditional small houses. On top of the hill over Vathi there is a castle built in 1807 by the French, which offers an amazing view even towards Lefkada. Vathi is considered to have been Homer’s port of Forkyna. There is also an Archaeological, and a folklore and marine museum in Vathi. The biggest part of the city was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1953 and rebuilt, preserving however the traditional architecture.
