RethymnoArticles: The city of Rethymno

Rethymno is the capital of the Rethymnon district in Crete. It is a widely visited city during the summer, while the many young people studying there help it remain alive all year long. It’s the third biggest city in Crete, after Iraklion and Chania. The modern city is built on the same location where the ancient city of Rithymna used to be. The city was also occupied by the Venetians till 1669, who built the famous Fortezza castle, which is still a trademark of the city. A great part of the Venetian old town is also preserved, being one of Greece’s best preserved Venetian towns.
