Matala

Matala is a small Cretan by the sea on the south coast of the island. Thousands of years ago, its inhabitants carved some caves inside the mountain which had been empty for centuries until some nomadic hippies found them and stayed there for a while. Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Kat Stevens and Joan Baez are only a few of the celebrities who have stayed in the caves of Matala.

Nowadays the small fishing village of Matala relies on the tourists who come to visit the caves, admire the charm of the past and experience the freedom.
